Nick Seaton

The workers' hands
Stilled to stillness,
Slowing to surrender.
The temporary idling
Of their finishing
and coking.
Lying in the soil,
cigarettes and gum,
a half eaten peach
with frayed skin, its flesh

glistening in the sun.
It came to rest along
the pavement;
the car. Its paintwork
white and wet
and covered in
yellow leaves.
